Every Line Has A Rhythm:
Selected Works of Raimund Krumme
Raimund Krumme’s drawings and animated films unfold through a distinctive language of line, movement, space and rhythm. In his work, the line is never just a contour or a means of representation; it has a life of its own. It moves, pauses, accelerates and transforms, creating a visual choreography in which even the seemingly still image contains the impulse of movement. This exhibition brings together a selection of Krumme’s drawings and animated works, offering an overview of the recurring visual ideas and signature gestures that have shaped his artistic oeuvre. Moving between the static and the animated, the exhibition invites viewers to consider drawing not as a fixed image, but as something that can suggest duration, tempo, tension and dance.
Krumme’s practice has developed across animation, drawing, commercial film, teaching and research. His animated films have received numerous international awards, including the First Special Jury Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (1987), the German Film Award (Filmband in Gold), the Silver Dragon at the Kraków Film Festival (1991) for Die Kreuzung (Crossroads), and the Grand Prix for Animation in Montréal for Passage. His films and drawings have been exhibited internationally, from Lisbon, Valencia, New Taipei City, and Meknes to Berlin and Georgia. Alongside his artistic practice, Krumme has taught and conducted research internationally, including at the California Institute of the Arts, the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, the Institut National de l’Audiovisuel in Paris, and the Taipei National University of the Arts. In 2022, he was an artist-in-residence at the Abbaye de Fontevraud.
At the heart of the exhibition is Krumme’s enduring fascination with movement: how a simple line can imply a body, how a sequence can transform a gesture, and how the passage from one image to the next can create rhythm. His work occupies the space between drawing and animation, stillness and motion, observation and imagination. In Krumme’s world, nothing is entirely static. A line carries time within it. A gesture becomes a sequence. A drawing begins to dance.
