Uber-Vernacular

Featuring the works of faculty members and students from the School of Art, Design and Media’s photography department, the exhibition explores how notions of place, and their ever-changing facets that are subjected to individual and collective experiences, can open themselves to other domains of inquiry from the social and the cultural, to the personal and the political.

Casting their eye on regions that include North India, Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Iraq, the exhibition features recent works of faculty members Ang Song Nian, Oh Soon-Hwa, Meridel Rubenstein and Elke Reinhuber, the lattermost artist premiering her work VENOMEMON in Asia for the first time.

The second section of the exhibition features works of students from the BFA (Hons) Photography and Digital Imaging programme that were produced during a 2017 field trip to Hanoi, Vietnam. They include documentations of everyday urban life, and impressions and interpretations of the poetics and the pulse of the city that have been captured in photography, video and installation.
